Heritage and Pedigree

In 1983 Derrick Hunt founded Specialist Surfacing Ltd after realising a business opportunity to process waste materials from Corus steelworks in Scunthorpe.

The company expanded to become the Hunt Group of Companies by 1990 when Derrick Hunt and Frank Hill also established Britcon as a specialist contractor for building and civil engineering.

2016

Britcon was named as one of the ‘1000 Companies to Inspire Europe’ in the London Stock Exchange’s report. 

2015

Britcon celebrate 25 years within the civil engineering and construction industry

2014

Britcon UK Ltd completes £20 million anaerobic digestion plant

Facility is said to be the largest gas-to-grid AD plant in the UK and the second plant constructed by Britcon.

The new anaerobic digestion plant, located in Widnes, will recycle around 90,000 tonnes of commercial and domestic food waste and will generate up to 17NWhs of biogas. The energy will then be transported directly to the national gas grid to provide enough power for 8,000 homes

2013

Britcon secures exclusive contract to deliver state of the art, open road toll system on the Humber Bridge – a UK first. Britcon secure further projects valued at £27 million to deliver Anaerobic digestion sites for Refood.

2012

Britcon receives 'Best Sustainable Project' through the 2012 LABC Awards.

2011

British Safety Council International Safety award Winners 2011 Britcon achieves British Safety Council 5 Star audit. The audit measures performance against key safety management indicators including leadership and continual improvement Britcon branches into emergency services division with Fire Training site contract.

2010

Major break though within the Renewables Energy sector as Britcon constructs Anaerobic Digestion facility in association with European specialists.

2008

Britcon achieve 'best collaboration and integration' through constructing Excellence in recognition of Central Government Framework. NAO quote framework as 'an exemplar project'.

2007

Britcon achieves CSCS Silver Certificate.

Britcon achieves Core Status Module as Network Rail Contractor.

Britcon framework of projects with VOSA (Vehicle Operator Services Agency) used as Test Case study within Houses of Parliament at launch of JCT Constructing Excellence Contract. Introduction by Sir Michael Latham.

Britcon enters the top twenty Yorkshire construction companies ranked by turnover for the first time within Constructing Excellence’s Construction Focus magazine.

2006

Annual turnover increases to £35 million. CHAS accreditation achieved.

2004

Britcon appointed as Constructor to £40 million Central Government national construction framework of projects for VOSA to run until 2007.

This Partnering approach utilises the BeCollaborative contract.

Major long term Partnering Framework contracts secured with Lincolnshire County Council and Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council.

2003

Turnover increases to £26.5 million.

Operating within Constructing Excellence principals much of Britcon’s work is now procured on a Partnering basis.

Considerate Constructor National Award Winner.

2002

First partnering projects undertaken.

Construction-line limits rose to £9,375,000 per project.

Britcon established as Best Practice Contractor.

2001

Britcon completes the £3million phased alteration and extension of Brake Bros. Limited coldstore and ambient warehouse at the A1 Triangle, Grantham.

2000

Hunt Group Ltd placed by Yorkshire Post within the top twenty Yorkshire Regions companies by growth.

1999

Britcon Construct Advance Carton Handling Facility.

Britcon's most prestigious project undertaken at the time, comprised the construction of Golden Wonder's new Advanced Carton Handling facility in Scunthorpe. The implementation of the overall scheme formed part of a £9million development. The warehouse constructed by Britcon to food production standards was designed to feed cartons to ten production lines.

1997

Britcon relocates to larger operating base. Britcon Engineering Services established as Steelwork fabricator and erector.

1996

Britcon achieves accreditation to BS EN ISO 9002 for Quality Assurance in Civil Engineering and Building Construction.

1995

Britcon undertake first £1 million project within Commercial Sector. Same year DVD was invented.

1993

Britcon established as preferred contractor with many Public and Private Sector Clients. The longest recession for the UK, since the 1930s, was declared over.
