Goole Swing Bridge is a six span bridge, situated between Goole and Saltmarsh carrying two tracks of the Gilberdyke to Goole line over the River Ouse. At the time of its construction in 1869 it was thought to be the second largest railway swing bridge in the world, it remains today full operational, and a fine example of Victorian bridge building excellence.
Following a robust tender exercise in November 2009 Scunthorpe based company BRITCON LIMITED has been awarded an order worth 1.8 million pounds, from Main Contractor Carillion Plc, to carry out strengthening works to the 6 span Network Rail owned Bridge. Britcon's "Engineering Services" Division will install 450 tonnes of new strengthening steelwork into the existing structure during a 6 week blockade commencing 2nd October 2010. The majority of this steelwork will be secured utilising the existing rivet holes and will require the removal and replacement, with specialist tension control bolts, of 45000 rivets. Britcon will be working alongside local company Jack Tighe Limited who have secured an order worth ___ million pounds to paint the bridge.
These works form only part of the investment Network Rail are making in Goole Swing Bridge to make it more reliable for passengers, having already completed some early works on the bridge with no disruption to services, Ducts and Cables to and from the signal box were installed between September 2009 and February 2010.
