Britcon working on behalf of combined authorities SICE (Sociedad Ib̩rica de Construcciones El̩ctricas), a world leading specialist in intelligent transport and environmental control systems, Britcon was employed to undertake a civils and bridge strengthening project to allow the upgrade of Humber bridge toll system and associated booths. Firstly with the aid of our in house engineering company, new steel members were welded to the bridge decking, beyond the bridge strengthening, new ducting, equipment plinths, hardstandings and surfacing was replaced.

The existing toll collection system was installed in 1981 and as such the technology was becoming obsolete and high maintenance. The new and innovative collection system was one of the first open road tolling arrangement to be installed in the UK, where vehicles do not need to stop while driving through the toll plaza. They are billed through electronic methods via tags tied to a Humber Bridge toll account.
