Following the completion of the Performing Arts Centre, Britcon has completed the construction of a new £1.75million Learning Resource Centre at the New College Pontefract campus.
The project involved the complete dismantling and demolition of the existing D Block which was constructed in the early 1970s, orginally designed and contracted as a Gymnasium with lower ground floor changing rooms.
The new building comprises two stories with a reinforced concrete frame and masonary infill panels with an internal area of 570m2. The new Learning Resource Centre involved the design and construction of a 3 storey multi-functional learning resources building with a gross floor space of 1378m2 including a main entrance and access area.
The works were segregated from the main College activities which involving a special licence obtained from Wakefield Council for access across the adjacent public park, this involved the formation of a temporary access road which was removed at the end of the project and the park reinstated.
The new building accommodates a range of activities allowing flexibility of accommodation and free movement within the centre. The building created an internal circulation link between the first floor balcony and the Perfoming Arts Block and the student common room on the west side along with the music and drama departments at ground level on the north side.
The completed facility provides an attractive and inspirational educational environment for both students and staff alike. Natural light was intoduced to create an uplifting environment and an atrium link provided to the east side of the new annexe. All access into the new Learning Resource Centre is controlled through the new reception area and detection systems were installed to enable control to be retained on books, software and hardware. For this reason all floors are served by an internal accommodation stair, visible from the control desk which gives access to 1st and lower ground floors.
