Works Scope

Britcon was appointed as Principal Contractor for this new build and extension project, which involved the complete dismantling and demolition of an existing block constructed in the early 1970s and originally built as a gymnasium with lower ground floor changing rooms.

The works were segregated from the main college activities, which eliminated disruption and included Britcon obtaining a special licence from Wakefield City Council for access across the adjacent public park.

The scheme included the provision of all heating, cooling, electrical installations, emergency lighting, lift installation and furnishings, together with external services, drainage and landscaping.

Key Project Challenges

  • Live education environment
  • Coordination of specialist theatre lighting, visual and sound subcontractors.

How we successfully delivered the project

The new facilities involved the design and construction of a three-storey building including a main entrance and access area. The new, two storey College building comprised of a reinforced concrete frame and masonry infill panels. The building created an internal circulation link between the first-floor balcony and new facilities including a Performing Arts Centre and Learning Resource Centre.

Natural light was introduced to create an uplifting environment and an atrium link provided to the east side of the new annexe.

Key to the delivery of this project was the successful coordination of the works within a live college campus by using modern, collaborative engagement tools and personnel. Stakeholder engagement included design and co-ordination meetings with the estates/FM team, students IT and college departments, followed by coordination meetings for testing, commissioning and client install items.
