North East Lincolnshire Council awarded Britcon the prestigious contract of pedestrianising Victoria Street in Grimsby.

It was essential to work around shops, pubs, restaurants and other businesses so that they were not affected by the construction. Most work took place out of normal hours (mostly at night) to ensure that the public had minimal disturbance during the day.

The project involved granite paving, hard landscaping, decorative lighting using LED illumination, and creating a wi-fi zoned area.

The sewage and service systems were also upgraded. Statistics have shown that the shops economy Has improved through this opportunity, as well as making policing the area easier, so the project has created a safer and more pleasant environment for the owners of the shops their customers and visitors to the town centre.

National recognition of the transformation of Victoria Street was received when the project was 'highly commended' in the Pedestrian Environment category of the Local Government News Street Design Awards 2009. The award follows recent commendation from the British Council of Shopping Centres Town Centre Environment Awards received in June 2009
